Wrestlers First Athletes Selected For Team Scotland
With the Commonwealth Games in Delhi only 70 days away, Commonwealth Games Scotland (CGS) and the Scottish Wrestling Association today announced the 10 wrestlers (three men and seven women) selected to represent Team Scotland at the Games in October. This is the first of 16 sports competing in Delhi to have its athlete selections confirmed. One of the original six sports included in the first Games in 1930, wrestling is now an optional sport and was last in the Games at Manchester in 2002, and it will also be in Glasgow in 2014. Commonwealth Games Scotland and Glasgow 2014 have announced the names of 30 up and coming, talented athletes who are the potential Scottish sports stars of Glasgow 2014 in four years time. Selected from Wrestling are Megan Malone and Tony McKenna along with coach Alan Harper. The 30 athletes, 16 coaches and 10 mentors who have been selected for the Achieve 2014 programme, a new initiative designed specifically to enhance the winning opportunities of Scottish athletes and coaches on the world stage. Scottish team successful in Sassari
The Scottish team finished 3rd overall of 22 competing nations at today's City of Sassari tournament, held in Sardinia. Scottish wrestlers also performed well individually as Donna Robertson (48kg) and Sarah Jones (72kg) both won Gold medals in the Women's Freestyle, while team-mates Fiona Robertson (48kg) and Kathryn Marsh (59kg) claimed Silver. Jayne Clason took bronze in the 55kg event. In the Men's Freestyle, Viorel Etko at 60kg and Sean Keogh at 74kg both won Silver medals to bring Scotland's medal tally to seven.
